WTA Rabat

No matter if you know the tournament as the Morocco Open, the Rabat Grand Prix or the WTA Rabat, this event is one of the biggest tennis tournaments to be held in Africa.

The tournament was first established back in 2001 but since that date, it has led a somewhat nomadic existence throughout Morocco but one thing that has remained consistent is that no matter where it has been held in the North African country, the action has continued to take place on outdoor clay courts and that has seen the event continue to attract a number of clay court specialists as well as household names to the southern Mediterranean for some exciting tennis that you can now easily watch live via the live stream partners featured on this page.

The tournament was first established back in 2001 when the event was hosted by Moroccan capital city of Casablanca where Zsofia Gubacsi (Hungary) defeated Maria Elena Camerin (Italy), to pick up the first title in the city and of the tournament as a whole.

Other winners of the then WTA Casablanca Open included Patricia Wartusch (of Austria who defeated Klara Koukalova in the 2002 final), Rita Grande (of Italy who defeated compatriot Anotonella Serra Zanetti in the 2003 final) and Emilie Loit (of France who defeat L’udmila Cervanova of Slovakia in the 2004 final).

The tournament then moved to Rabat for 2 years with Nuria Llagostera (of Spain who defeated Zheng Jie of China in 2005) and Meghann Shaughnessy (of the United States of America who defeated Martina Sucha of Slovakia) in the finals to win the title.

In 2007, the tournament was on the move again with the city of Fez (sometimes known as Fes) which is the country’s second largest city.

The new home venue for the event hosted 6 tournaments in all, many of which featured stars of the sport to highlight the growing stature of the tournament.

The first event in Fez saw Milagros Sequera (Venezuela) defeat Aleksandra Wozniak (of Canada) to pick up the title.

Other winners in the city were Gisela Dulko (of Argentina who defeated Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain in 2008), Anabel Medina Garrigues (who defeated Ekaterina Makarova in 2009), Iveta Benesova (who defeated Simona Halep in 2010), Alberta Brianti (who in 2011, also defeated Simona Halep) and Kiki Bertens (who defeated Laura Pous Tio in 2012).

For the 2013 event, the Morocco Open moved to the city of Marrakesh where Francesca Schiavone of Italy defeated Lourdes Dominguez Lino to the pick up the first title.

The other winners in Marrakesh were Maria Teresa Torro Flor (who defeated Romina Oprandi in 2014) and Elina Svitolina (who defeated Timea Babos in 2015).

The tournament moved back to the city of Rabat in 2016 with winners during the current period winning including Timea Bacsinszky, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Elsie Mertens and Maria Sakkari.

The tournament has not seen too much success for Brits but Johanna Konta did come close in 2019 when she was the runner up against maria Sakkari.

The 2022 edition of the event, known as the Grand Prix SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem, was won by Martina Trevisan of Italy who defeated Claire Liu of the USA with the Japanese duo of Eri Hozumi and Makoto Ninomiya winning the doubles event.
Stream Moroccan Open Live

As with the majority of tournament that are run on the WTA Tour, the WTA Rabat also features as doubles event which can also be watched live online via the tennis streaming services that we feature.

The doubles side of the draw features a mix of doubles specialists and singles stars who are pulling double duty but no matter who is in action, you can be assure don some great action from the Morocco Open as whilst not every player at the event will be a top star, the majority are clay court specialists and that ensure slots of exciting action.

Unfortunately, the lack of star power and the relatively low ranking of the event does mean that the tournament can be difficult for fans in the UK to watch on television as even if you have an expensive and ongoing subscription to a pay tv sports channel that shows live tennis, the likelihood is that only a select number of matches form the event will be shown.

Make sure that you miss none of the action that you want to watch, from the tournament opener to the final and from the lowest ranked player to the biggest stat as the great live stream services that we feature allow you to pick and choose to watch the action that you want to watch.

If you do decide to watch the Morocco Open tennis live via the streaming services of the online bookmakers featured on this page you will need to be aged 18 or over and have a funded account but you can then match live tennis from tournaments held across the globe all year long.
