Mexican Open Tennis

The Mexican Open, is a professional tennis tournament that features on both the men’s ATP Tour and the women’s WTA Tour.

For the men, it is a ATP World Tour 500 Series ranked event and for the women it is WTA International ranked tournament.

Matches are played on outdoor hard courts at the Fairmont Acapulco Princess in the seaside resort of Acapulco in Mexico.

The tournament, which was first established back in 1993 when it was a men’s only tournament was first held in Mexico City, the capital of Mexico. The event moved to Acapulco in 2001 when the women’s event was added.

Another major change at the Mexican Open was the change form clay courts to hard courts as it now is a lead up to the first ATP Masters 100 event of the season, the Indian Wells Masters.

The tournament has a large prize fund for the men’s side of the draw and lots of ranking points on offer so it is able to attract many of the world’s biggest stars which makes for an exciting tournament, all of which you can watch live online via our ATP Acapulco live streaming partners.

Whilst the WTA Acapulco event may not have the same ranking points on offer and the same level of prize funds, it does give fans an opportunity to see some new players and for lower ranked players to go up against established stars and provide potential shocks.

ATP Acapulco

The men’s event at the Mexican Open is also known as the ATP Acapulco and thanks to its placing on the calendar as a warm up event for the Indian Wells Masters and its mix of decent ranking points and a good prize fund, it is a tournament that attracts many of the sports top names.

The quality of potential matches on offer in Mexico can be seen in the players who have gone onto win the title and trophy at the event.

The winner of the inaugural event, in 1993 and in fact the first 4 tournaments was Austria’s Thomas Muster. Other household names to win in Mexico include the likes of Jiri Novak (Czech Republic), Gustavo Kuerten (Brazil), Carlos Maya (Spain), Rafael Nadal (Spain), David Ferrer (Spain), Grigor Dimitrov (Bulgaria), Dominic Thiem (Austria), Sam Querrey (the United States of America), Juan Martin del Potro (Argentina) and Nick Kyrgios (Australia).

As with the majority of ATP tour level events, there is also a doubles event that runs alongside the men’s single event, that features a mix of doubles specialists and singles players doing double duty.

That makes for many great matches and many matches that are simply watch matches but unfortunately that can be difficult to do on British television.

Thankfully, all of the matches from the ATP Acapulco can now be watch live online via the live stream services featured on this page.

The fact that event takes place in the popular beach resort of Acapulco in the European winter also surly helps the tournament attract players!

Once more a look at the players who have gone on to pick up the title on the women’s side of the draw tells you all you need to know about the stars attracted to Mexico including Amanda Coetzer, who won the inaugural event in 2001.

Other big names to win in Mexico include Venus Williams (the United States of America), Flavia Pennetta (Italy), Sara Errani (Italy), Dominika Cibulkova (Slovakia), Sloane Stephens (the United States of America), Wang Yafan (China) and Britain’s own Heather Watson.
