ATP Tokyo

The Japan Open is a professional tennis tournament that is part on the men’s ATP Tour where it is a ATP World Tour 500 Series ranked event.

Matches take place at the Ariake Coliseum in the Japanese capital city of Tokyo with all of the action played on outdoor hard courts.

First established in 1972 and known as the Tokyo Outdoor Grand Prix, the Japan Open has also held a women’s WTA Tour event. Up until 2008 the tournament was a joint event but now there is a separated event, called the Pan Pacific Open that takes place on the women’s tour at the same venue.

As part of a series of tournaments taking place in this part of Asia around the same time, the Japan Open is able to attract many of the world’s top stars with many of the ATP top 10 ranked players appearing.

That coupled with a number of lower ranked players getting a good opportunity at the top level makes for an interesting tournament and one that can often provide shocks.

Amongst the winners in recent have been big 4 stars including Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal and Andy Murray.

Watch Japan Open Tennis

No matter if you know it as the Japan Open or the ATP Tokyo, the event is one of the oldest and most important tennis events to take place on the Asian continent.

Since starting up in 1973, the event has undergone a number of changes to the set up of the event, to its location and even to the surface that is played on.

For much of the tournaments existence, the Japan Open has been played on outdoor hardcourts, although the current venue does have a retractable roof at the impressive Ariake Coliseum.

The venue offers a main stadium court that is capable of holding around 10,000 fans in attendance as is the main stadium court of the Ariake Tennis Forest Park.

Located in the Koto area of the Japanese capital city of Tokyo, the venue is one of the biggest tennis stadiums on the tour outside of the 4 Grand Slam majors and it is also one of the biggest in Asia.

Between 1978-1981, the event changed to an outdoor clay court surface.

Between 1979 and 2008, the event was also a joint event between the men’s and women’s tour but there is now a separate event held for women in the city.

Upon its inauguration in 1973, the tournament was a Grand Prix circuit level event before becoming a Championship Series level event in 1990. In 1998, the event became an International Series Gold level event before between an ATP 500 series ranked event in 2009.

As one of the biggest tournaments in Asia from the get go, and with a large prize fund on offer plus plenty of ranking points, it is no surprise that the Japan Open has attracted plenty of household names and stars down the years with some previous players to enjoy success including Australia’s Ken Rosewell (who won the inaugural event) and Leyton Hewitt, Nick Kyrgios and John Newcombe, American Pat Du Pre, Czech Ivan Lendl, Swede Stefan Edberg, American’s John McEnroe, Jim Courier, Andre Agassi, and Pete Sampras, Dutch Richard Krajicek, Swiss stars Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka, Spain’s David Ferrer and Rafael Nadal, France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Japan’s Kei Nishikori, Argentine Juan Martin del Potro, Canadian Milos Raonic, Serbian Novak Djokovic, Russia’s Daniil Medvedev and Britain’s own Andy Murray and Tim Henman.

Over the last decade or so, the event has seen lots of superstars pick up the title including Kei Nishikori (2012 and 14), Stan Wawrinka (2015), Nick Kyrgios (2016), Daniil Medvedev (2018) and Novak Djokovic (2019).

The tournament didn’t take place in both 2020 and 2021 and upon its return to the tour, it was Taylor Fritz who won an al American final against Frances Tiafoe to win the 2022 edition.
