Miami Masters
The Miami Open, also known as the Miami Masters, is a professional tennis tournament that takes place on both the men’s ATP Tour and the women’s WTA Tour.
The tournament is ranked as an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 level event on the men’s side and a Premier Mandatory event on the WTA Tour which makes the tournament sits just 1 level behind the 4 Grand Slams on both tours.
Big Money = Big Players
With a huge prize fund for both men and women and with huge ranking points on both sides of the draw, the tournament has almost a Grand Slam feel about it as all of the biggest names in the sport are there.

ATP & WTA
Both the ATP Miami and WTA Miami events are amongst the biggest on the tour but there has been some criticism of the courts in Miami as they are thought of as amongst the slowest on both tours. In the heat and humidity of Miami, that makes thing hard work for the players but does lead to plenty of long rallies and some exciting tennis.
The tournament takes place in February, just after the Indian Wells Masters so all of the players are well settled and ready to give their best tennis. With such a long gap between the Australian Open and the French Open, this back to back Masters period is a huge indicator of which players are in form, who are struggling and just who is going to be the next breakthrough star of either tour.

Early Days
The tournament was established in 1985, by Butch Buchholz with the aim of making it the first major of the year as back then the Australian Open was held in December. Originally the tournament was held at Laver’s International Tennis Resort at Delray Beach in Florida. With an incredible prize fund of 1.8m Dollars (only the US Open and Wimbledon offered a bigger prize fund at the time), the tournament got off to a great start with all of the stars of the time appearing. The initial success saw the tournament move to Boca West before relocating to its current home of Key Biscayne.
Ranking Importance
Apart from the 4 Majors, the Masters Series events are the only tournaments to feature all of the top ranked players on both the men’s and women’s tours which makes it an unmissable tournament but without an expensive subscription to a pay TV channel it can be difficult if not impossible to watch the action on TV.
The tournament also features 96 players on both sides of the draws, just like the 4 Grand Slam Majors which makes the tournament stand out that bit more on the calendar and of course it makes it that bit harder to win.

In 2006 the Miami Open became the first tennis tournament to use the Hawk-Eye system in the United States of America with the first players to use a challenge been Jamea Jackson in a match against Ashley Harkleroad- now there’s a piece of trivia for you to show off down the pub or at work!
Big Name Winners
The quality of the action at the Miami Open can be seen by the previous winners of the event. On the men’s side the likes of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras and Ivan Lendl have all one the tournament on 1 or more occasions. The biggest indicator of the quality is probably the fact that Rafael Nadal has made the final of the Miami Masters on 4 occasions and has yet to win it. He lost to Federer, Djokovic (twice) and surprisingly against Nikolay Daydenko.
Previous winners on the women’s side of the draw has included Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka, Kim Clijsters, Martina Hingis, Steffi Graf and Monica Seles with Britain’s own Johanna Konta winning in 2017.
ATP Miami
The men’s side of the event also started in 1985 and it was another home favourite who picked up the inaugural event with Tim Mayotte defeating Scott Davis in an all American final.

WTA Miami
The inaugural event at the Miami Open was held in 1985 when home favourite Martina Navratilova picked up the title and ever since then the tournament has enjoyed lots of home success and has attracted lots of big name stars to give us some great action and many must watch matches for tennis fans.

History
As is so often the case with tournaments around the world, it was home favourites who dominated things in the early years before the tournament really established itself as a global draw.
Inaugral Event
The first ever final on the men’s side of the event saw an all American line up when Tim Mayotte defeated Scott Davis in a 5 set battle.
Although the next 4 finals were won by Czech or Swedish stars, from the 1990 edition to the 1996 edition, ever winner was an American star and the same happened between 2000-2004.
For much of this century, it has been European stars who have dominated the ATP Tour action at the Miami Masters including wins in both 2009 and 2013 for Britain’s own Any Murray.
Women’s Event
On the WTA Tour, things also started off with wins for US stars as it was Martina Navratilova who won the inaugural event and Chris Evert who won the 2nd edition but from there until the late 1990’s, it was European stars who dominated with Germany’s Steffi Graf leading the way with 5 wins and 3 straight victories from 1994-96.
Thanks to the dominance of the Williams sisters, the US once again dominated the WTA Tour event from the late 1990’s to the mid 2010’s but in both 2019 and 2021, Australia’s Ashleigh Barty picked up the first titles.
The 2022 edition was dominated by the shock news that not only would defending women’s champion Ashleigh Barty not be there to defend her title but she would go on to announce her retirement from the sport.
In the end it was Iga Swiatek of Poland who would take the title from her when she defeated Naomi Osaka of Japan in what proved to be a comfortable straight sets victory.
The final of the men’s singles event saw Carlos Alverez of Spain defeat Casper Ruud of Norway.
There almost some success for Britain in the men’s double event when Neal Skupski, alongside partners Wesley Koolhof of The Netherlands, reached the final but in the end they came up short and lost to Hubert Hurkacz of Poland and John Isner of the USA.
